We Are Finally Talking About Parenting – SC Podcast EP_04

Welcome to the next episode of the Sober Courage Pod,  Episode _04 – “Pop Life”

I am very excited to have this great opportunity to finally talk about recovery and parenting, and how it pertains to sometimes every day life in our family! In this episode I chat about how I used to bring my daughter to meetings and how I explained to her why I still go to those meetings. I also share about our adventurous family trip to visit Uncle C. in rehab, and the many conversations leading up to it.

…with a short musical tribute to Prince.

Somewhere, I lost a half a day on April 21st with the death of Prince! That really was a weird experience, because I don’t think that I idolize musicians but music is a huge part of my life and Prince’s music was huge during my teen years. So in a matter of a few hours, as I was trying to make sense of what I had just heard, I think my entire teen years along with all the same emotions came up! I have to admit that I had a split moment when it felt like I should be pouring myself a tall glass of wine followed by a few shots – you know just to make the feelings go away faster! UGH.  I had a Diet Coke and some chocolate instead… I am so very saddened… I don’t have any words left…

At notMYkid, we prepare kids to face everyday challenges with courage and confidence. Through our unique education models of peer-to-peer education, we address the life-changing issues of substance abuse, bullying, unhealthy relationships, eating disorders, depression/self injury, and internet safety. Talking with Your Kids About Your Past
Many parents in recovery agonize over what to tell their children about why they are not living together, or about how to explain things that happened in the past when the parent was using drugs or alcohol. At the same time, most parents in recovery also worry about their children (especially older children and teens) developing drug problems of their own.

Pop Life – Prince

What’s the matter with your life
Is the poverty bringing U down?
Is the mailman jerking U ’round?
Did he put your million dollar check
In someone else’s box?

Tell me, what’s the matter with your world
Was it a boy when U wanted a girl? (Boy when u wanted a girl)
Don’t U know straight hair ain’t got no curl (No curl)
Life it ain’t real funky
Unless it’s got that pop
Dig it

Pop life
Everybody needs a thrill
Pop life
We all got a space 2 fill
Pop life
Everybody can’t be on top
But life it ain’t real funky
Unless it’s got that pop
Dig it

Tell me, what’s that underneath your hair?
Is there anybody living there? (Anybody living there)
U can’t get over, if U say U just don’t care (Don’t care)
Show me a boy who stays in school
And I’ll show U a boy aware!
Dig it

Pop life
Everybody needs a thrill
Pop life
We all got a space 2 fill
Pop life
Everybody can’t be on top
But life it ain’t real funky
Unless it’s got that pop
Dig it

What U putting in your nose?
Is that where all your money goes (Is that where your money goes)
The river of addiction flows
U think it’s hot, but there won’t be no water
When the fire blows
Dig it

Pop life
Everybody needs a thrill
Pop life
We all got a space 2 fill
Pop life
Everybody wants to be on top
But life it ain’t real funky
Unless it’s got that pop
Dig it

Pop life
Everybody needs a thrill
Pop life
We all got a space 2 fill
Pop life
Everybody can’t be on top
But life it ain’t real funky
Unless it’s got that pop
Dig it

Great post!! I especially like the Phoenix house story about discussing your addiicon with your children. The guilt and shame is something I struggle with. Great stuff !! Thanks for the morning read after my morning reading!!
