The New Technology Revolutionizing Addiction Treatment

When people think of addiction treatment they most likely imagine someone undertaking a rough few weeks of detoxing in conjunction with group therapy sessions and counseling. Although these activities are an essential part of treatment, the advancement of technology, specifically in the medical field, has allowed for new and improved forms of treatment. Neuromodulation is one such recent advancement that has great potential within the medical field – including treatment for Substance Use Disorder and other addictions.

What is Neuromodulation?

In the broadest sense, neuromodulation is a method of treatment that works by focusing on balancing out activity in the brain. Our brains operate through a series of neurotransmitters and receivers, each stimulating different actions, emotions, and thought processes. It is through these neurotransmitters that we’re able to complete even the most basic of tasks.

Drug use and certain conditions are such things that can hinder or overstimulate normal brain activity or cause it to completely stop functioning altogether. When this happens, we can experience many severe effects, such as conditions like depression and anxiety. When a trauma occurs, the brain goes into flight or fight and the brain releases chemicals. Often times these traumas are not stored correctly thus causing PTSD.  While many medications can help treat these conditions, medicine is limited in its ability to work consistently for different people. Neuromodulation, on the other hand, allows a much more individualistic approach.

How Does it Work?

Before treatment begins, patients go through measurement with an electroencephalogram (EEG), which measures the activity and electrical patterns within the brain. This process allows for brain mapping to identify the exact activities from the patient’s brain, setting the stage for customized treatment.

EEGs can reflect the current state of the brain, from vision issues, memory problems, balance issues and emotional damage. We can even see if a concussion occurred and if that had any residual damage. The entire process is non-invasive, causing no pain for the patient throughout and the EEG recording only takes 5 minutes.

After the initial EEG, a protocol is set to increase neuromodulation in the areas of the brain where the brain function has decreased activity. By working to reset the brain frequency to the same rate across all functional areas of the brain, neuromodulation can help regulate brain activities back to normal levels, helping to counter conditions related to brain function and abnormalities. Most people state that, after they have received this treatment with Windmill Wellness Ranch, they finally feel “normal” again, or “I haven’t felt this good since I was a child.”

Who Can Benefit?

The honest answer to this question is anyone. Neuromodulation has the ability to improve small things like balance and memory to much larger scale conditions. Any type of neurocognitive brain disorder can see improvement through neuromodulation treatments, such as:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Sleep disorders
  • Concussion
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Menopause
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Depression
  • ADHD

How Can it Help Those Struggling with Substance Use Disorder?

As some of the most difficult struggles in overcoming substance addiction are due to the impact of drugs and alcohol on the brain, neuromodulation can be an exceptionally useful form of treatment for these conditions.

Substance Use Disorder and other addictions are conditions that impact the mind and the body. It’s this impact on the brain and body that leads to withdrawal symptoms when someone stops using a substance – and the symptoms worsen the more long-term and higher intake the substance use is. These withdrawal symptoms are one of the many reasons why many people struggle to successfully detox and recover from Substance Use Disorder.

Aside from helping regulate brain activity, neuromodulation can also help by alleviating symptoms of pain some experience during withdrawal. Anything that can alleviate symptoms of withdrawal makes it much easier for patients to make it through the detoxification process, the first step towards recovery.

As a form of treatment, neuromodulation is still in the early stages of development. Further studies will reveal more information about which types of neuromodulation and brain activity are most efficient in treating certain conditions. For addiction treatments, neuromodulation already has practical applications in the treatment process.

How Can I Get Access to This Treatment?

At Windmill Wellness Ranch, we offer the revolutionary PeakLogic PrTMS neuromodulation process as part of our Brain Frequency Center. Through use of EEGs and targeting of areas impacted by Substance Use Disorder and other addictions – the attention and impulse control areas of the brain – we have seen incredible results for chronic addiction patients who go through the treatment.

We offer this treatment to any patients who wish to include it in their treatment plan, as well as, those who wish to travel to our Brain Frequency Center simply to receive this treatment. Both in-center and outpatient treatments are available, and we use quantitative EEG processes that include both brain mapping EKG tracking to help better understand how electric activities in the heart connect to the brain.

As studies into neuromodulation progress, we expect to be able to offer more treatments that can help our patients even further on their road to recovery. Until then, we believe that neuromodulation processes can become an essential step for anyone struggling with Substance Use Disorder and other addictions – and you can receive this treatment at Brain Frequency Center.
